DBWorld Map uses the metadata contained in postings on the DBWorld mailing list to geographically locate conferences, workshops and other events related to database research. In addition to the geographical information, deadlines, starting dates, and URLs of the events are retrieved from the DBWorld messages.
The application uses the Microsoft Virtual Earth Web Service to locate the cities geographically and display maps for these events.
The idea for this service was inspired by the German "Informatiklandkarte", a map of computer science research institutes in Germany.
The service is supported by the following institutions:
- The Microsoft Innovation Center Aachen / Center for Software Concepts (Zentrum für Softwarekonzepte, ZfS), established in 2005 by Microsoft, Fraunhofer FIT and RWTH Aachen, assists developers and small and mid-sized user companies in their IT projects through R&D, training and coaching oriented towards .NET technologies.
- Informatik 5 of RWTH Aachen (Information Systems & Database Technology, headed by Matthias Jarke) works on the formal analysis, prototypical development, and practical testing of meta-information systems.
- The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT), headquartered at Sankt Augustin near Bonn, investigates human-centered computing in a process context. The usability and usefulness of information and cooperation systems is optimized in their interplay with human work practice, organization and process.
